District hosts "Water is Life" traveling art exhibit
The District will be displaying the winning posters from Metropolitan Water District’s (MWD) “Water is Life” poster contest from March 25 through April 2 in our lobby as part of the 2013 MWD Traveling Art Show. The exhibit features 36 pieces of framed student artwork that depicts the theme “Water is Life.” These 36 winners were selected from 162 finalists submitted to Metropolitan by 28 member and retail water agencies in Southern California. From January through July 2013, these art pieces will tour 21 participating agencies for at least a week in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura Counties. Over 10,000 additional people will get an opportunity to view the wonderfully expressive and colorful water conservation-focused artwork.
The purpose of the poster contest is to inspire an understanding of water issues through works of art with one central theme—finding ways to conserve water. The theme of the contest is “Water is Life” as it relates to the stewardship and conservation of water. That means wise water use and conservation inside and outside the home, at school, in the community, in business and industry, in agriculture, in recreation, and in the environment.
The posters are judged on originality, creativity, neatness, accuracy, and the water-is-life message. Kindergartners through 12th graders are invited to participate. All in all, nearly 20,000 K-12 students participated in these local contests.
In addition to going on exhibit, these 36 finalists are featured in Metropolitan’s 2013 “Water is Life” Calendar.
