We all use water in many ways that include drinking, bathing, washing and watering our lawns, but water is a limited resource. That is why it is important that we all find ways to conserve water every day in every way. Kids play an important role in making sure that every drop counts and there are things you can do to help your family save water. If everyone saves a little we can save a lot!

What is water? Water is many things. It can come in the form of a raindrop or be as big as the ocean. When frozen, water can be a soft snowflake or as hard as ice. Water can be fresh, salty, boiling, freezing, dirty, clean, refreshing, plentiful, and scarce. Depending on where you live, water can be all around you or very hard to find.

Where does the water go? When you flush the toilet, or the water drains out of the clothes washer or the shower or the sink, where does it go? Pipes in your house carry the water into pipes under the ground and streets called sewer pipes, which carry the wastewater to the wastewater treatment plants.

Why should we conserve water? Even if your community is not experiencing a water shortage today, it may in the future. Getting into the water conservation habit today is a good idea to prepare for tomorrow.

Why do we need water? We need water everyday to stay healthy, to grow food, for transportation, irrigation, and industry. We need it for animals, plants, for changing colors and seasons.

Where can we find water? Over 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered with water. There is the same amount of water on Earth now as there was when the planet first cooled enough to let the first great rains fall billions of years ago. It keeps moving in an endless cycle called the water cycle. |
